Carriageworks as a venue is a extraordinary blank canvas, that, with it's shear size has the potential to home works of wonder and amazement. Zhang Huang's Sydney Buddha is a piece worthy of such a space
The exhibition comprises of two parts. The first being the metal mould created by the artist, which travels to galleries around the globe. The second is the 20 tonnes of incense ash collected from Buddhist temples around China. The burning of incense in temples is a part of the prayer ritual, so the collecting of the dust is really the creation of a shrine celebrating the prayers and wishes of the people.
The two pieces are built facing each other. Though in time one will disintegrate and crumble.
